Daily Tidbits 4/25 – The Penguin

The word penguin is a combination of the Welsh words ‘pen’ meaning head and ‘gwyn’ meaning white.

Gwyn comes from the Gaelic word ‘fionn’ meaning white, shining or visible and the Gaulish word ‘vindos’ which has the same meaning.  Both ‘fionn’ and ‘vindos’ trace back to the Latin word ‘visionem’ which means to see, or a vision, to know.  The source of all these words is the Hebrew word עין ‘ayin’ which means the eye.  עין ‘ayin’ also means knowledge in the Hebrew language as well (Numbers 15:24) The letter ע is passed down with a ‘g’ sound through many languages to the would could also be pronounced ‘ghayin’ which is very similar to the Gaelic ‘gwyn.’

Here we see the penguin is a parable of ‘knowing’ or ‘seeing’ the head.  Who is the Head?  Messiah.

1Ch 29:11  Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.

1Co 11:3  But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
Eph 1:22  And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,
Eph 4:15  But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Eph 5:23  For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
Col 1:18  And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.
Col 1:19  For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell;

The Hebrew word for white is לבן ‘laban’ from the root בן ‘ben’ which means a son…

The Greek word for knowledge or  to know is γνῶσις ‘gnosis’ which also comes from the word עין ‘ayin’ meaning the eye.

Growing in Grace & Knowledge
2Pe 3:18  But grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

γνῶσις ‘gnosis’ is used in the Septuagint to translate the words דעה ‘deah’ which means knowledge.  Literally, the door of the eye revealed from the root דע.  The second word is דעת ‘daat’ which means knowledge and comes from the same root.

The word penguin is also linked to the French word ‘pingouin’ which is referring to an ‘auk.’  An auk is very similar to the penguin but can fly.  The word ‘auk’ traces back to the Latin word ‘olor’ which means a swan.  It is interesting to note that the word swan in English comes from the Old English word ‘swan’ which means sound, or to sing.  Here the shadow picture of the penguin is linking to sound.  Seeing and hearing…

Rev 1:12  And I turned to see the voice which spoke with me.
Rev 1:15  and His feet like burnished brass having been fired in a furnace; and His voice as a sound of many waters;

Seeing and hearing comes through 7.  7 colors in spectrum, 7 notes on musical scale.  is interesting to note that the colors black and white on the penguin display this number.  Black absorbs all 7 color frequencies while white reflects them.  This combination of black and white, or light and darkness, points to the Hand of the Creator.

Isa 45:5  I am YHWH, and there is none else; there is no God except Me. I will clothe you, though you do not know Me,
Isa 45:6  that they may know from the rising of the sun, and to its going down, that there is none besides Me; I am YHWH, and there is none else;
Isa 45:7  forming light, and creating darkness; making peace, and creating evil. I, YHWH, do all these things.

The Genesis creation narrative has YHWH separating light from darkness on the First Day.  This is the time period that His Spirit moved upon the waters and His voice/sound went forth.  Again the connection to light (see) and sound is seen.

In the beginning, the Word/Voice of the Most High acted upon the waters and brought forth Light.  Sound frequencies based on physics and mathematics were applied to water.

Everything of mass and matter is vibrating, everything makes a sound (frequency).  Everything is reSONating.
Heb 11:3  By faith we understand the ages to have been framed by the Word of God, so that the things seen should not come into being out of things that appear.
Heb 1:2  in these last days He spoke to us in the Son, whom He appointed heir of all; through whom He indeed made the ages;
Psa 33:6  Through the Word of YHWH the heavens were made; and all their host were made by the breath of His mouth.
2Pe 3:5  For this is hidden from them by their willing it so, that heavens were of old, and earth by water, and through water, having subsisted by the Word of God,

In the beginning sound was on the waters.  The English word sound comes from:
SOUND, n. [L. sonus, from sonom to sound, sing, rattle, beat, &c. This may be a dialectical variation of L. tonus, tono, which seems to be allied to L. teneo.]

Notice the link between sound and a bird/swan.  Recall that the auk (a tributary in the etymological river of the word penguin) traces back to this swan/sound connection.
Further connecting the number 7 and sight and sound is Mt. Sinai where Israel heard/saw the Voice of Elohim.

Exo 20:18  And all the people saw the thunders, and the lightnings, and the sound of the ram’s horn, and the smoking mountain. And the people looked, and they trembled, and they stood from a distance.

Exo 20:18  וכל־העם ראים את־הקולת ואת־הלפידם ואת קול השׁפר ואת־ההר עשׁן וירא העם וינעו ויעמדו מרחק׃

‘ra’im et ha’qolot’ – Literally they saw the voices.

The 10 commandments were given during Shavuot, which is a combination of 7×7 (Deuteronomy 16:9).

7 x 7 = 49
The Hebrew word four is ארבע ‘arabah’ which comes from the root רב ‘rav’ meaning head of the house.

The Hebrew word for nine is תשע which comes from the root שע ‘sha’ meaning the Shepherd.

Isaac Mozeson traces the word ‘penguin’ back to the Hebrew words פנה ‘penah’ which means a corner, specifically the ‘head of the corner’ and לבן ‘laban’ which means white and as mentioned previously comes from the root בן ‘ben’ which means son, but also to build as a son ‘builds’ the house of the father.

Psa 118:21  I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation {ישועה ‘yeshuah}.
Psa 118:22  The stone {אבן} which the builders {בנה} refused is become the head stone of the corner {פנה}.
Psa 118:23  This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

This prophecy is referring to Messiah Yahshua.
Mat 21:42  Jesus said to them, Did you never read in the Scriptures, “A Stone which the builders rejected, this One became the Head of the Corner? This was from the Lord, and it is a wonder in our eyes?”
Mar 12:10  Have you not even read this Scripture: The “Stone which the builders rejected, this One came to be Head of the Corner;
Luk 20:17  And looking at them He said, What then is this which has been written, “The stone that the builders rejected, this one came to be for the Head of the Corner”?
Act 4:8  Then being filled of the Holy Spirit, Peter said to them, Rulers of the people and elders of Israel,
Act 4:9  if we are being examined today on a good work of an infirm man, by what this one has been healed,
Act 4:10  let it be known to all of you, and to all the people of Israel, that in the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, in this name this one stands before you whole.
Act 4:11  This One is the Stone counted worthless by you the builders, the One who has come to be into the Head of the Corner;
Act 4:12  and there is salvation in no other One, for neither is there any other name under Heaven having been given among men by which we must be saved.

פנה also means the face in Hebrew.

Yahshua is the Presence or ‘Face’ of YHWH
KJV
Psa 42:5  Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.

Psa 42:5 (42:6) מה־תשׁתוחחי נפשׁי ותהמי עלי הוחילי לאלהים כי־עוד אודנו ישׁועות פניו׃

LITV
Psa 42:5  O my soul, why are you cast down and moan within me? Hope in God, for I shall yet thank Him for the salvation of His presence.

Isa 63:9  In all their affliction, He was not a foe; and the Angel of his Face saved them. In His love and in His pity He redeemed them. And He bore them up, and lifted them up all the days of old.

Heb 1:3  Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

2Co 4:6  For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Messiah is the head of the corner, the chief cornerstone of His body.
Eph 2:18  For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
Eph 2:19  So, then, you are no longer strangers and tenants, but you are fellow citizens of the saints and of the family of God,
Eph 2:20  being built up on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the cornerstone,
Eph 2:21  in whom all the building being fitted together grows into a holy temple in the Lord,
Eph 2:22  in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.

1Pe 2:1  Then laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil words,
1Pe 2:2  as newborn babes desire the pure soul-nourishing milk, that you may grow by it;
1Pe 2:3  if indeed you “tasted” “that the Lord is good;” LXX-Psa. 33:9; MT-Psa. 34:8
1Pe 2:4  to whom having drawn near, a living Stone, indeed having been rejected by men, but chosen by God, precious;
1Pe 2:5  you also as living stones are being built a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1Pe 2:6  Because of this, it is also contained in the Scripture: “Behold,” I lay in Zion” an elect, “precious Stone,” “a Corner-foundation;” “and the one believing in Him shall not be ashamed, never!” Isa. 28:16
1Pe 2:7  Then to you who believe belongs the preciousness. But to disobeying ones, He is the “Stone which those building rejected; this One became the Head of the Corner,” Psa. 118:22
1Pe 2:8  and a Stone-of-stumbling, and a Rock-of-offense” to the ones stumbling, being disobedient to the Word, to which they were also appointed. Isa. 8:14
1Pe 2:9  But you are “an elect race,” “a royal priesthood,” “a holy nation,” “a people for possession,” so that “you may openly speak of the virtues” of the One who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; LXX-Ex. 23:22; MT-Ex. 19:5, 6
1Pe 2:10  you who then were “not a people, but now are the people” of God; “the one not pitied then but now pitied.” Hos. 1:6, 9 2:1, 23

There is a fascinating parable seen in the actions of emperor Penguins in the Antarctic during the dark winter months where they join together as one body to overcome the elements.

As seen in a previous tidbit, the cold harsh winds of winter is a picture of persecution and deathclick here.

It is through this persecutiong that His body reveals His witness.  The Greek word for witness is μάρτυς ‘martus’ from whence comes the English word ‘martyr.’

Rev 3:14  And to the angel of the assembly of Laodicea, write: These things says the Amen, the faithful and true Witness, the Head of the creation of God:

Act 1:8  but you will receive power, the Holy Spirit coming upon you, and you will be witnesses of Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

Isa 44:8  Do not dread, nor be afraid. Have I not declared and made you hear since then? So you are My witnesses: Is there a God besides Me? Yea, there is none. I have not known a Rock.
Isa 43:8  Bring out the blind people, yet there are eyes; and the deaf, yet there are ears to him.
Isa 43:9  Let all the nations be assembled, and let the peoples be gathered. Who among them can declare this and cause us to hear former things? Let them give their witnesses, that they may be justified. Or let them hear and say, It is true.
Isa 43:10  You are My witnesses, says YHWH; and My servant whom I have elected; that you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed; nor shall any be after Me.
Isa 43:11  I, I am YHWH; and there is no Savior besides Me.
Isa 43:12  I declared, and I saved, and I proclaimed; and there is not an alien god among you. And you are My witnesses, says YHWH, and I am God.
Isa 43:13  Yea, from this day I am He, and no one delivers from My hand. I will work, and who will reverse it?

It is interesting to note that the Hebrew word for witness is עד which is the opposite of דע meaning to know mentioned above in the etymology of the word penguin.
